If you have always wanted to enhance the size and shape of your breasts, or if you have noticed a significant volume loss after pregnancy or losing weight, you can turn to breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves inserting implants into the breasts to increase volume and enhance the natural shape and symmetry of the bustline.
Dr. Moraitis is double board-certified in general and plastic surgery and offers breast augmentation procedures for patients in and around Trinity, FL. With decades of experience, he delivers dependable results.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Because breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, Dr. Moraitis will examine you beforehand to see if you are a good candidate. The best candidates:
- Are in good overall health
- Are at least 18 years old for saline implants and 22 for silicone
- Are in good mental health
- Have a normal weight
- Have asymmetrical breasts
- Have smaller breasts and want larger ones
- Have time to recover
You are not a good candidate for a breast augmentation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have an infection, if you smoke, if you have serious medical conditions, or if you have unrealistic expectations.
The Benefits of Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation can offer various benefits, both aesthetic and medical. These benefits include the chance to:
- Even out asymmetrical breasts
- Add breast volume
- Change breast shape
- Rebuild breasts after mastectomy
- Boost confidence
Breast implants are also long-lasting, allowing you to enjoy the results you want for years. They can enable you to expand your wardrobe options and to look even better in your usual clothes. Breast augmentation is also a safe procedure, especially when an experienced surgeon like Dr. Moraitis performs it.
Breast Augmentation Explained
During a breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Moraitis makes incisions and inserts either saline or silicone gel implants. Learn more about what to expect below.
The Consultation
During the consultation for breast augmentation, Dr. Moraitis will perform an exam of your breasts. He will also obtain your full medical history and a list of the medications you take. You have the opportunity to tell him about your goals, the results you would like to achieve, and ask questions.
The next part of the consultation involves viewing implant samples and choosing the size and type of implant you want.
How Can I Prepare?
To prepare for the surgery, you want to avoid any first or second-hand smoking for 4-6 weeks before surgery. Smoking can make the surgery more complicated and can slow down the healing process.
Two weeks before the procedure, you should stop taking blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen and aspirin. You should also make sure that you have someone ready to drive you home after surgery and that you set up a recovery area in your home to make the process easier.
What Is the Surgery Like?
On the day of the surgery, we recommend not wearing makeup, contact lenses, or jewelry. You will receive general anesthesia and Dr. Moraitis will begin the surgery.
This includes making incisions in the predetermined areas, inserting the implants, and then closing the incisions. You will then spend some time in a recovery room before being able to go home.
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovering from breast augmentation requires rest. Our typical breast augmentation patient will take at least 5-7 days off work and avoid any strenuous activities. You should also avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications while you recover. A full recovery can take up to six weeks, though most people can restart many of their activities after three or four weeks.
Other Things to Consider Before Getting a Breast Augmentation
There are a few other things you will have to decide on with Dr. Moraitis’ help, including the type of implants you want.
Implant Types: Which Is Better for Me?
The type of implant, whether saline or silicone, will play a big role in how your breasts look and feel, so choosing carefully is essential.
Silicone Gel Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants contain gel made of silicone, which duplicates the feel of breast tissue. They offer a more realistic feel. They do limit the incision locations because silicone implants are pre-filled. However, Dr. Moraitis utilizes a special device for implant placement, allowing him to reduce the length of your incision.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants contain salt water. They are easier to insert since they do not need prefilling. This makes it possible for Dr. Moraitis to make smaller incisions and then fill the implant to the desired size.
Incision Options: Which Is Best for Me?
The decision of which incision will work best will depend on the type of implants you receive. Dr. Moraitis can help you with this choice.
Transaxillary Incision
A transaxillary incision is one that Dr. Moraitis makes in the armpit. This ensures that there are no scars on the breast itself. Saline implants work best for this type of incision.
Periareolar Incision
For this incision, Dr. Moraitis makes an incision along the outer edge of the areola. He creates a pocket into which he places the implant. It is a good option if you have a darker areola border since it camouflages the scar. It is also an incision that you can use more than once, if necessary.
Inframammary Incision
Dr. Moraitis makes this incision in the bottom crease of the breast. It is an excellent choice for both saline and silicone implants, and it does not leave a noticeable scar as it is well hidden under the breast.
Can Breast Augmentation Be Performed in Combination with Other Procedures?
Dr. Moraitis can perform a breast augmentation together with a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover, as well as with CoolSculpting® and more.
