Breast Augmentation Blog ModelBreast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, with 365,000 primary augmentation and 148,000 breast implant exchange surgeries performed in 2021. This procedure is popular among patients because it can effectively increase breast size while improving their shape.

Are you seeking a breast augmentation procedure or currently have one scheduled? It is important to know what you can expect during the recovery process and how you can ensure the best results from your procedure. Learn more about what to do after breast augmentation and what you should avoid below.

Things You Should Do After Breast Augmentation

To have a smooth recovery and see the best results, you should do the following in the weeks following your breast augmentation:

Wear Supportive Undergarments

For about six weeks after your breast augmentation, you will need to wear a supportive bra. In the first two weeks, you may be required to wear a special compression garment for support. After this, you can wear a quality sports bra to provide extra protection while your breasts are recovering.

Sleep on Your Back

For the first 2 weeks after surgery, you will need to sleep on your back, not on your side or stomach. This is to avoid putting any direct pressure on the breast implants, which can damage them or hinder your recovery process. After about 2 weeks, you can transition to a side lying position as tolerated.

Massage the Breasts

To reduce the risk of capsular contracture over time, you should practice gently massaging your breasts. This should not be done in the first few days following surgery; it can be started about one week after the procedure.

What to Avoid After Breast Augmentation

To help prevent complications during your recovery and ensure you do not alter your outcome, you should avoid the following after breast augmentation:

Contact Sports and Strenuous Exercise

Avoid strenuous exercise for about six to eight weeks after your breast augmentation. Do not participate in contact sports that could cause a direct impact to the breast implants for at least six to eight weeks. Either of these can damage the breast tissues or implants and hinder your recovery.

Tight or Irritating Clothing

During the first few weeks after augmentation, wear loose clothing that will not irritate your skin. You will have incisions in your armpit area or under your breasts, and tight or uncomfortable clothing could lead to friction and irritation of these incisions.

Smoking or Drinking

Certain things can negatively impact your health and prolong the recovery process after breast augmentation. These include smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. During the first few weeks of recovery, avoid both of these to enable a speedy, smooth recovery.
